Bend shool deadlines near for grandfathering, change requests
The shifting school boundaries for Bend-La Pine Schools will affect many local families as the changes impact nearly every elementary school, and all middle and high school boundaries in Bend. Affected families will receive notification letters from the district.
Students whose boundaries are changing can request to stay at their current school. Students now in fourth, seventh, 10th or 11th grade can choose to be grandfathered and remain at their current school. Families must notify schools of their intent to be grandfathered by Feb. 27. Forms are available at area schools and were also mailed to all affected families.
Students who do not qualify for grandfathering, but wish to remain at their current schools, may fill out an Attendance Area Change Request form and submit it to their school for consideration by March 2. Forms are available at area schools or on the district’s website http://bit.ly/1zZIXks.
Transportation will be the responsibility of the families, both for those choosing grandfathering and Attendance Area Change Requests.
Families can learn if they are affected by the changing boundaries by examining the new boundary maps available at www.bend.k12.or.us/boundary2014 or by asking their school office staff members. Each school has a list of its affected students.
The boundaries are shifting in order to balance enrollment at area schools and to create boundaries for two new schools, which are slated to open in the fall of 2015. The recommendations, which were approved by Superintendent Ron Wilkinson earlier this month, are based on work from a 30-member Boundary Review Committee and input from local parents. .
