Juniper Golf Course to host innovative ‘First Green’ event for Sky View Middle School students

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Juniper Golf Course will host an innovative environmental education outreach program that uses golf courses as environmental learning labs, when 90 middle school students from Sky View Middle School visit the golf course Tuesday, October 29 for a GCSAA First Green field trip.

First Green is a Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) program which focuses on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) principles where students get hands-on learning opportunities in a real-life setting. GCSAA First Green curriculum benefits students by helping them apply their classroom knowledge in an engaging outdoor setting.

WHEN: Tuesday, October 29 (9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.)

WHERE: Juniper Golf Course Clubhouse and Putting Green (1938 SW Elkhorn Ave., Redmond, OR 97756). Juniper Golf Course is a public course operated by CourseCo, Inc.

WHO: 90 middle-school students from Sky View Middle School in Bend, who will learn from the agronomy staff, including superintendent Chanaan Fasanello, a 32-year GCSAA member and assistant superintendent Carlos Figueroa, a 4-year GCSAA member, and others in the industry.

WHAT: An interactive, highly engaging field trip that provides hands-on learning and exposes students to the golf industry. Benefits of GCSAA’s First Green include applying STEAM lessons learned in class, inspiring students, building community, strengthening futures, advancing golf and having fun.

The students will split into groups to rotate through interactive stations including Water Molecules and Surface Tension, Water Conservation/Usage, Cool Tools, Autonomous Mowers, Reel vs. Rotary Mowers, Irrigation, and a Golf Putting Lab before eating lunch at noon and departing at 1:30 p.m.
