Sunday’s Heaven Can Wait 5K marked 25 years of fundraising, support for Central Oregon’s breast cancer community

(Update: Adding video, comments from St. Charles staff)

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- More than 1,200 people registered to take part in Sunday's 25th Annual Heaven Can Wait 5K fundraiser, supporting the breast cancer community in Central Oregon.

The event was put on by the St. Charles Foundation and began Redmond High School. The goal is to raise $125,000 for Sara's Project. It'll help fund patient support services, education and technology.

"The title of the event, Heaven Can Wait says it all," Jenny O'Bryan, St. Charles Foundation's executive director, said Sunday. "When you see our participants, when you see the people out here, all of our survivors have a different colored shirt. You see families that have been out here because they are newly diagnosed with cancer, or they were diagnosed over 25 years ago."

St. Charles Hospital Service Line Administrator Mari Shay said, "I'm very honored to be a member of the St. Charles family and to be able to lead the amazing caregivers and work that we do at St. Charles Cancer Center."

Last year, the event brought in about $100,000. Since 2000, the event has raised almost $2 million for the breast cancer community's needs.
