Day to Honor Earth May Be Year’s Warmest

If ever you had the urge to go green, Saturday is the day.

“Clean our yards up, and maybe plant a tree or two,” Ken Karnes said Friday about his plans for Earth Day.

Saturday is Earth Day, and you won’t have to look far to find a way to celebrate.

At 11 a.m., the Earth Day Fair will be set up in front of the Environmental Center on Kansas Street in downtown Bend.

“Lots of vendors, all in the streets — mainly just sharing ideas of how you can live a little lighter, kind of sustainably minded organizations,” said Jackie Wilson, a sustainability educator at the Environmental Center.

Recycling, composting, planting a garden — you can get a lesson on each and more.

“Planting Brussels sprouts and cabbage, carrots, peas and lettuce. The best way to grow local is to step outside and pick it,” said Heather McBride of her Earth Day plans.

Of course, you can go wild, too — really wild. Dress up as your favorite animal for a Bend tradition, the Earth Day Parade. Line up at Bond and Louisiana at 10:30; the parade starts at 11.

“You know, they can be an animal, or lets them know they share this world with a larger group of beings,” said Wilson.

In Redmond, head to American Legion Park for an Earth Day Fair benefiting the Redmond Parks Foundation, that’s from 10 to 4.

No matter where you are in Central Oregon, with a beautiful, sunny weekend on tap, there’s one clear piece of advice.

“Enjoy — enjoy the beautiful Earth,” said Brice McMorris of Bend.

Earth Day is celebrated worldwide, in 175 countries. And while we are celebrating on Saturday, the United Nations has designated Sunday, April 22nd as International Mother Earth Day.
