Foe’s Mistake Lifts Summit Golfer to State Title

KTVZ

Fifteen-year-old Summit freshman Madison Odiorne admits her first time competing for a state title wasn’t all smooth sailing.

“From the beginning, it was a little rough,” Odiorne said Thursday. “The front nine was not my best round, by far.”

She started the day seven shots behind Churchill High School senior and three-time defending state champion Caroline Inglis. Inglis was well on her way to going down in the history books as the first golfer to win four consecutive state golf titles.

Then, a shocking mistake.

“Apparently, the scorecard wasn’t correct when they turned it in, and she had signed for a lower score than what she really had,” Odiorne explained.

Inglis signed for a final score of 68, but actually shot a 69, disqualifying her from winning the championship.

Odiorne made a solid comeback on the second day of playing and won with a score of 71, only two strokes behind Inglis.

“It doesn’t really feel like a win,” Odiorne said. “I mean, in my mind, she won the whole thing.”

Shocked by the announcement, Odiorne says Inglis’ mistake was a big wake-up call.

“I was kind of wondering what was going on, so I checked my scorecard at least five times before turning it in, just to be sure,” Odiorne said.

Though it wasn’t the victory she was hoping for, she’s not giving up. Now, ironically, since Odiorne is only a freshman, she has a chance to be the first player to win four consecutive state golf titles.

If she goes on to win, she says she’ll be doing it for Caroline Inglis.

“Well hopefully, I’ll play three more years of good golf and if I do break the record, it would definitely be for Caroline,” Odiorne said. “I’d give her the credit for that, and she’ll probably help me through that.”

Odiorne’s win helped Summit win its fourth consecutive team championship, something only five other golf teams have accomplished. Next year, the Storm will have a chance to tie the Marist girls’ record of five straight championships, set from 1998 to 2002.
