Injured hiker rescued east of Bend

A Bend woman who fainted while hiking on the Dry Canyon Trailhead about 20 miles east of Bend Wednesday afternoon was rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Deschutes County 911 dispatchers got a call around 4:20 p.m. from Paul Petersen, who said his wife, Mary Bryan, 60, had fainted while hiking with him on the Dry Canyon Trail, off Hwy. 20E, said Sgt. Mike Biondi, sheriff’s Search and Rescue operations manager.

Petersen advised dispatchers his wife was unable to stand without fainting, Biondi said.

Three sheriff’s deputies, a Forest Service law enforcement officer, two Bend Fire paramedics and six Sheriff’s Search and Rescue members responded to Bryan’s location, he said.

The medics arrived and began to treat Bryan, who was about three-quarters of a mile up the trail, Biondi said. After deputies and SAR personnel arrived, Bryan was secured on a backboard and carried part-way down the trail.

She was then placed in an ambu-sled, towed behind an ATV, and brought to the trailhead, Biondi said. The fire medics took Bryan to St. Charles-Bend.
