Chalking it up in NorthWest Crossing

The 2013 NorthWest Crossing Spring Festival is under way, and on Saturday , dozens of professional artists, students and kids took part in a very popular event.

The east side of the street on Northwest Crossing Drive was filled with chalk and turned into wonderful street art.

The Street Chalk Art Competition featuredkids who had a chance to create their own art pieces.

There were also four professional artists creating murals.

Laila Dzene, w ho was featured last year in the event, was creating a 3-D mural depicting water lillies and a dragonfly.

“You kind of need to design what you would do and see the perspective,” Dzene said about the craft of her art. “And then it’s lots of work, lots of crawling on the ground –and next day you are pretty much in pain.”

Cash prizes were awarded in the adult and student categories.

The spring festival continues Sunday with music, food and children’s activities.

It all begins at 11 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m.
