Redmond man arrested in alley stabbing of teen boy

A 20-year-old Redmond man made his first court appearance Tuesday on attempted murder and other charges, accused of stabbing a 16-year-old boy several times during an argument Monday morning.

The suspect, identified as Bernardino Martinez, and the teen got into a verbal altercation around 10 a.m. Monday in an alley behind the Old Redmond Motel, between Southwest Forest and Evergreen avenues, said Lt. Mike Kidwell.

During the verbal dispute, Martinez allegedly stabbed the teen several times with an unknown type of knife, Kidwell said.

The victim was taken to St. Charles Redmond for treatment of his stab wounds and later released. Kidwell said he’s not aware of where on the body the boy was stabbed, but prosecutors in court mentioned 10 cuts to the victim.

Martinez was arrested later and lodged Monday night in the Deschutes County Jail on attempted murder, assault and other charges.

He made an initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon on the charges in the DA’s initial charging document, called an information, which also includes three counts of first-degree robbery and single counts of unlawful use of a weapon, third-degree theft and reckless driving.

Jail records Tuesday indicated a total bail of $966,000. That was lowered to $866,000 and the list of charges revised after Tuesday’s court appearance to attempted murder, one count of first-degree assault, three counts of first-degree robbery, and single counts of unlawful use of a weapon and reckless driving. Martinez is due back in court Feb. 10.

Kidwell told NewsChannel 21 the man and teen are not believed to have known each other. As for what provoked the argument, the officer said, “They didn’t like the way they looked at each other, is what it boils down to.” At least one robbery charge may relate to the suspect allegedly planning to take the teen’s hat.

Police have interviewed witnesses to the incident, Kidwell said, but if there are other witnesses who haven’t yet talked to officers, they are asked to contact Redmond police at 541-504-3400 or through county 911 dispatchers at 541-693-6911.
