Safe School Alliance to mark 16th anniversary

KTVZ

On Wednesday, February 18, at 8:30 a.m., school superintendents from Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties will join local law enforcement, fire officials, public health leaders, juvenile justice leaders and district attorneys as they come together to celebrate the 16 th anniversary of the Safe Schools Alliance (SSA) at the Deschutes County offices located at 1300 NW Wall Street in Bend.

The celebration will begin with the formal signing of the SSA Proclamation followed by a presentation from Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Ron Wilkinson and Culver School District Superintendent Stefanie Garber.

“Our partnership is growing stronger each year as we continue working together to enhance the safety of our students, staff, schools and communities,” said John Rexford, Superintendent for the High Desert Education Service District (HDESD), SSAs host agency. “Through the Safe School Alliance, we are more equipped as a community to reduce crime, prevent bullying and create a better environment for students and educators.”

The SSA network of regional school districts and partner agencies meet monthly to share information, discuss items of common interest and concern, advise member agencies on the adoption of policy and explore curriculum and programs that increase positive school climate for the region’s more than 30,000 students.

History

SSA was established in September 1998, originally called CRASH (Crime Reduction At School Houses), by then Deschutes County District Attorney Mike Dugan. The program was designed to enhance safety within school environments, protect students and teachers and provide accountability for crimes committed at schools.
