Driver cited in Madras pickup-pedestrian crash

A Madras woman has been cited in connection with a Monday afternoon crash that sent a well-known Madras businessman to the hospital with broken ribs and other injuries, police said Wednesday.

Barbara Smith, 42, was cited Tuesday evening for failure to obey a traffic control device and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, said Police Chief Tanner Stanfill.

Officers were dispatched around 4:35 p.m. Monday to the reported collision at the intersection of D and Fourth Streetl.

A preliminary investigation found that Garry Boyd, 59, was struck by a white 2008 Dodge pickup driven by Smith, Stanfill said.

Smith was turning south onto Fourth from D Street when she struck Boyd as he crossed the street. The chief said Smith stopped and called 911 after the collision.

Boyd was taken by Jefferson County EMS to St. Charles Madras, then flown by Life Flight helicopter to St. Charles Bend, Stanfill said. The chief said family members reported Boyd was in stable condition Wednesday at the Bend hospital.

Since 1996, Boyd – who turned 59 on Sunday — has co-owned the popular Great Earth Natural Foods and Deli on Sixth Street in downtown Madras with his wife, Troy.
