Will Hoodoo finally get the snow it needs?

KTVZ

Many people have been praying for snow, only to have those prayers answered with sun and record-breaking temperatures. Now snow is finally back in the forecast, which is good news for ski resorts like Hoodoo, after only being able to open for 11 days so far this season.

The ski resort says it needs 3 feet to open, and that’s not looking likely.

“A lot of old-timers say they see this once in a decade, but twice in a row is unbelievable,” Hoodoo Office Manager Daidre Streeter said Thursday.

Old Man Winter seems to be robbing Hoodoo of a season once again.

“What are the odds of it happening two years in a row?” seasonal worker David Vance said.

Right now, only year-round employees are still working at the mountain, but, even with bare slopes, seasonal workers are still only a call away.

“Hoodoo has a strong following of supporters,” Streeter said.

Vance was called a few days before New Year’s because Hoodoo was ready to open.

“I gave my notice here, hoping to play in the snow,” Vance said.

Fortunately, his part-time employer, Sargent’s Stereo, allowed him to come back after the 11-day season.

“I’m one of the fortunate people that are working,” Vance said.

Streeter says employees are getting antsy — to say the least.

“We don’t know what to do with ourselves. We don’t experience this. We live at Hoodoo,” Streeter said.

Vance said, “Up until the last couple years, it’s been reliable as a place to work in the winter.”

While the future for the rest of this season is looking bleak, some remain hopeful.

“If they’re open next season, I’ll be there working,” Vance said.

Many are still praying, snow-dancing and crossing their fingers for the three feet Hoodoo needs to open.

“We’ll open real fast if we get the snow,” Streeter said.

Streeter added that season pass holders will be able to use their pass again next year. However, if this happens again next season, it could be detrimental.
