Bend bike shops react to Trek bikes recall
Trek Bicycles is recalling nearly 1 million bikes over a safety issue that resulted in one rider becoming paralyzed. Bend bike shops say the odds of a problem are small, but they are ready to give them a close look.
The recall covers 900,000 Trek bikes in the United States and 98,000 in Canada.
The recall involves bikes with a “quick release” lever on the front wheel that can interfere with the disk brakes, causing the wheel to stop or separate from the bike frame, according to Mike Schindler, Co-Owner of Sunnyside Sports in Bend.
Even though it is a concern, Schindler said Wednesday the chances of a problem are unlikely.
“It’s very rare that a quick-release comes undone if they’re closed how they should be,” he said. “It’s really a non-issue, but it’s still something that we’re going to be on it, for sure. It’s good for us if people have questions on whether they’re in the recall, absolutely bring it in.”
Trek said the problem caused some riders to be injured, including one that resulted in being paralyzed. Other incidents involved facial and wrist injuries.
If you have an affected bike or you’re unsure, you can contact an authorized Trek retailer for free inspection or installation.
In the recall notice, Trek states “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.”
