Investigator: Juveniles with lighters spark Bend brushfire

KTVZ

Two Bend juveniles playing with lighters ignited a brushfire Saturday afternoon that quickly climbed into trees and burned about 1/3 of an acre before being contained, officials said.

The fire was reported around 4:15 p.m. in an undeveloped area off Hardy Road, in an area of homes west of Bend’s North Fire Station, said Fire Inspector Steve Steve Stenkamp.

Four Bend fire engine crews and two from the Oregon Department of Forestry quickly encircled the fire, limiting it to 1/3 of an acre.

No buildings were damaged by the blaze, according to Stenkamp, who said units were on scene for over an hour to make sure the fire was out.

Stenkamp said two juveniles admitted to starting the fire with lighters near an old tree fort.
