Bend police K-9 tracks fleeing fugitive to doghouse
A man wanted for violating a no-contact order after pulling a gun and threatening to kill two women at a motel last summer was spotted by an officer Monday afternoon in southeast Bend, triggering a pursuit through several yards and his arrest when a police tracking dog found him hiding in a backyard doghouse, officers said
Last Aug. 27, police arrested Nathan Wade Pogue, 24, on numerous charges involving an incident at the Dunes Motel on Northeast Third Street, said Lt. Nick Parker. An investigation determined Pogue pointed a handgun at the two Bend women, 20 and 23 years old, threatening to kill them in a room at the motel, he said.
On Jan. 2, the 20-year-old reported Pogue had violated his no-contact order. Parker said the new investigation found Pogue had made threats and also offered bribes in an attempt to get to the woman to lie about the earlier case, still pending trial.
Investigators also learned Pogue had a warrant for his arrest out of Washington County on a parole violation in an unrelated crime to the Bend incidents, Parker said.
Around 4:30 p.m. Monday, a Bend officer recognized Pogue walking along Reed Market Road near Southeast Fifth Street, Parker said. The officer tried to contact Pogue, but he ran, trespassing through numerous yards and climbing over fences in an attempt to get away, the lieutenant said.
Officers quickly set up a perimeter and deployed the team of Officer James Kinsella and K-9 Haras to track Pogue, finding him hiding in a wooden doghouse in the backyard of a home in the 600 block of Southeast Glencoe Place (north of Reed Market Road). He was taken into custody without incident around 4:40 p.m. and taken to the Deschutes County Jail.
Pogue was held without bail on the out-of-county warrant, also facing new charges including two counts of tampering with a witness, bribing a witness, violation of a release agreement, menacing, harassment and six counts of second-degree criminal trespass for the homes’ yards he went through.
