Many give to help Redmond 4-Her who lost hogs in fire
A fire destroyed a shed south of Redmond late Sunday night and spread to an adjacent carport serving as temporary shelter for a girl’s 4-H swine project, killing her two hogs, fire officials said.
Redmond Fire & Rescue crews were called just before midnight to a fire on the property of Tharon Lindqust at 5510 Southwest Harvest Avenue, said Battalion Chief Chris Simmons.
The hogs named “Sweetpea” and “Boss”did not survive Monday morning’s fire.
This was Lindquist’s daughter Emilee’s first year participating in 4-H, and she with the help of her parents started to take care of the hogs, feeding the boy and girl hog three pounds of food a day and giving them fresh water.
Fire crews arrived to find the storage shed fully involved, with the fire spreading into an adjacent juniper tree, Simmons said. The shed had a carport extension on each side, one that had been converted into the temporary shelter for the daughter’s 4-H swine project.
Emilee’s father said when he saw the flames, all he could think about was saving those pigs.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Emilee is a member of the Mud Buds 4-H Swine club, which has set up an online account to help her rebuild her project for this year.
On the page, the group has set a goal of $1,000 to help the family replace the hogs so she can still take part in this year’s fair season. It said the family also will need help with new pens, shelter and the loss of feed.
“Well I just wanted to say thank you to everyone because that is a big deal for me because it is my first year,” hog owner Emilee Lindquist said.
