Do you remember the eclipse of ’79?

The Feb. 26, 1979 total solar eclipse had great reviews.

“I always think anything like that is worth it, because that to me is a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” said Redmond resident Dianna Davis.

And yet, for some, it’s twice in a lifetime.

“I’m privileged, because I get to see the whole thing twice,” she said. “I think people are going to love it.”

In 1979, eclipse glasses were not as common as they are now, and one memory shared by many was the pinhole projector.

“We made our boxes with the little tube you look through and you saw the reflection in the cardboard box,” Debbie Phelan recalled.

Even more prominent is the memory of total silence as the sky darkened for a couple of minutes.

“Everything became so quiet,” Davis said. “You didn’t hear birds, you didn’t hear people talking. Everyone was in awe. The Earth stood still for two minutes..”

Phelan had a similar recollection.

“Everything got kind of quiet,” she said. “I don’t remember if our dog acted differently — you know, it’s not a long period of time. But just as it was happening and it got more complete, you could tell there was more of a stillness in the neighborhood.”

Even 38 years later, people recall how quickly the eclipse was over.

“I remember it getting dark and bright again, and that was pretty much it,” said Eric Mathews.

“You just waited and then it all came back to light again,” Davis said. “It was very fast, just seemed like, ‘Wow, all this for a couple minutes?’ All happened very fast.”

Despite already seeing one, and the long lapse between eclipses, the excitement for the event seems to remain strong.
