Police activity prompts Bend HS lockout, now over
(Update: Police say activity involved mental health issue)
Bend High School was placed on lockout for about 45 minutes Tuesday morning due to police activity in the area, a Bend-La Pine Schools representative said.
There were few initial details, but the lockdown was said to be precautionary in nature and began around 10 a.m. Residents saw numerous police officers in the area, some with rifles drawn for a time.
Officials later said the school day was continuing as normal and police had left the area.
A police spokesman said the police activity involved an individual with mental health issues.
A lockout means a school’s exterior doors are locked, preventing entry, but school usually continues as normal inside. A more serious situation prompts a lockdown, which means no one is allowed to enter or leave a facility and students often are held in place in their classrooms.
