Portland man killed in I-84 crash near The Dalles
A 42-year-old Portland man was killed late Monday night when his SUV left Interstate 84 near The Dalles, crossed the median and struck a concrete overpass wall head-on, Oregon State Police reported.
Troopers and medics responded around 11:30 p.m. to the reported single-vehicle crash on the freeway near milepost 82, said OSP Captain Bill Fugate.
A preliminary investigation determined a 2013 Toyota Highlander driven by David J. Higgins was heading east when it left the road to the south, crossed a large grassy and rocky median, then went up a steep embankment and hit the overpass wall, Fugate said.
The Toyota rolled several times, coming to a rest on its wheels in the median, the trooper said.
Higgins, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene, Fugate said. Factors being considered in the crash were speed and lack of safety restraints.
