Gas put in woodstove sparks Redmond-area shop fire

A Redmond-area resident escaped injury after putting gasoline in a shop woodstove Thursday night, sparking a small explosion and fire, officials said.

Redmond Fire & Rescue crews were called around 10:40 p.m. to the reported fire in a 30-by-25-foot detached shop in the 5000 block of Northeast 33rd Street, east of Terrebonne, said Fire Marshal Traci Cooper.

Crews arrived to find a moderate amount of smoke coming fromt he shop.

They learned the resident had put gasoline in a woodstove, causing the small explosion and sending burning debris throughout part of the shop, igniting several objects, Cooper said.

Crews were able to quickly contain the fire, which caused about $5,000 in damage.

“Redmond Fire & Rescue would like to remind the public that gasoline should only be used for its intended purpose,” Cooper wrote in a news release. “Never attempt to start or add to a fire using gasoline or other petroleum projects, as serious injury or property damage may occur.”
