Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Shay Mikalson announced Thursday that Michael Hicks has been selected to become Mountain View High School’s next principal. Hicks is currently assistant principal at Bend Senior High School.

“Michael brings with him a confident, approachable and collaborative leadership style that will be a great fit for Mountain View,” said Mikalson. “He is a great listener, communicator and team builder who has had rich leadership experience inside and outside of Bend-La Pine Schools.”

Prior to coming to Bend, Hicks served as assistant principal at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, California, a position he held for five years. He also has four years of experience as a dean of students and four years of teaching experience.

Hicks calls his leadership style student-centered and says he is excited to collaborate with a talented, dedicated group of staff members “to make decisions that are best for kids.”

“I have heard wonderful things about the Mountain View staff, students and community. I’m excited to build on the outstanding programs and culture the school already has and work together to make this school even stronger,” said Hicks. “My goal is to create an environment where all students and staff feel safe, welcome and valued. I want this to continue to be a place where staff look forward to coming to work and students look forward to coming to school.”

Hicks will begin his new duties on July 1. Current Principal Katie Legace is taking on a new role and will serve as Bend-La Pine Schools’ executive director of high schools. Legace has worked for the school district for 21 years, serving as principal at Pilot Butte Middle School for three years and as Mountain View principal for 11 years.
