Bend child’s welfare check turns up drugs; 2 men charged

A welfare check Monday on a 1-year-old child at a southwest Bend home led to the discovery of heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana and a butane hash oil (BHO) lab and the arrests of two men, police said.

Officers and a state Department of Human Services worker went to the home in the 19800 block of Mahogany Street in Romaine Village shortly before 10 a.m. to check on the child’s well-being, Lt. Juli McConkey said.

The child was in the custody of Gary Hachtel, 55, who was in possession of heroin when he was contacted by police, McConkey said.

Gregory Unruh, 36, who lives at the home, said the BHO lab police found was his. Large quantities of marijuana also were found there, the lieutenant said.

Hachtel was arrested by citation, in lieu of custody, on charges of heroin possession and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Unruh was taken to the Deschutes County Jail and booked on charges of methamphetamine possession, first-degree child neglect and manufacture of marijuana (cannabinoid extract). He was held on $45,000 bail.

The child was released to a relative, McConkey said.
