Former Canadian vice admiral found not guilty of sexually assaulting a sailor on a ship in 1991

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — A former Canadian vice admiral has been found not guilty of sexual assault and an indecent act over his behavior on a ship during a 1991 deployment. A judge in Ontario stated Monday the prosecution failed to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Former Vice Adm. Haydn Edmundson faced accusations from a woman who was 19 and of the lowest rank at the time. She testified she was responsible for waking up officers for night duties and Edmundson behaved progressively worse toward her during the deployment. He denied any sexual contact. The judge cited issues with the woman’s memory and lack of evidence. Edmundson’s lawyer said his client felt vindicated.
