Looming Real ID deadline causes rush for appointments
Even though the deadline for your real ID is right around the corner, DMV officials urged some people to hold off getting it.
Starting May 7th, federal law requires new standards for driver's licenses and other IDs. The TSA has said it will require the real ID to fly domestically. This has caused a rush for appointments for people to get their licenses updated.
However, the DMV wants people to consider this: Unless you are planning to fly in the near future, you do not need a real ID yet.
Chris Crabb, Public information Officer for the DMV says "If you don't have a flight scheduled for any time May 7th or into the future, you don't have to get a real ID. You can wait until your credential expires. You can choose to not get a real ID. You can use your passport if you do want to take a flight. So again, we're not forcing people to get real IDs. We just want to make sure that they have the information they need to make the choice that's right for them."
The DMV has some tips for people who are going ahead with a real ID. Consider trying to get an appointment or walk in at a DMV in a smaller community that might be less busy. Make use of the self-check-in stations to speed up the process. Be sure to bring a proof of your identity and two proofs of your mailing address. It takes about 3 weeks to get your real ID after you've completed the application.
