Fatal motorcycle collision on I-84, involving ODOT vehicle, near The Dalles

A two-vehicle fatal collision occurred on Interstate 84 near milepost 87 in Wasco County on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 11:51 a.m. Ryan Christopher King, 38, died after his Harley-Davidson motorcycle struck a stationary Oregon Department of Transportation attenuator vehicle.

The crash happened near The Dalles, involving an Oregon Department of Transportation operation on the highway.

The Oregon Department of Transportation attenuator vehicle, operated by Tristan David Service, 42, of The Dalles, was positioned and stationary in the left lane. It was serving as a safety barrier for a mobile brooming operation sweeping along the center median on I-84. King's motorcycle then struck the attenuator vehicle from behind.

The preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police indicated that King, 38, of West Richland, Wash., was operating the black Harley-Davidson motorcycle. King was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision.

The operator of the Oregon Department of Transportation vehicle, Tristan David Service, was not injured in the incident.

Oregon State Police was assisted by the Wasco County Sheriff's Office, The Dalles Police Department, Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
