OSP: Gunman found dead in Lakeview motel room after officer-involved shooting
Lake County deputy responds to shots-fired call, finds man with handgun
LAKEVIEW, Ore. (KTVZ) – A man who confronted a Lake County sheriff's deputy with a handgun at a Lakeview motel Saturday afternoon apparently was shot by the deputy and died in a motel room, Oregon State Police reported Sunday.
Deputies responded around 2:30 p.m. Saturday to the Interstate 8 Motel in Lakeview on a report of 10 to 15 shots fired, OSP Captain Tim Fox said.
As the first deputy to arrive awaited backup, a man came out of a motel room, armed with a handgun, Fox said.
The man pointed the gun at the deputy and refused commands to drop the weapon. The deputy fired one round, Fox said, and the man went back into the room and closed the door.
OSP’s SWAT team responded to the scene, and upon entering the motel room, the man was found dead. Fox said the man is believed to be the one who confronted the deputy.
OSP’s Major Crime Scenes Section and Forensics Division responded to the scene to investigate.
The deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, as protocol dictates, Fox said.
He said any further information will be released by or with permission of the Lake County District Attorney’s Office.
