WASHINGTON (KTVZ) – Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR-05) voted in favor of bipartisan bills over the past several days to support law enforcement in recognition of National Police Week.

The proposals that passed the House, which include efforts to support the recruitment and retention of police officers, come as the Portland Police Bureau and many other local law enforcement agencies face staffing shortages. Additionally, violent and property crimes recently landed Oregon on a list of the top 10 most dangerous states, her office noted in a news release, which continues in full below:

“I’ve had the honor of meeting county sheriffs and law enforcement from across the 5th District, and I remain committed to working closely with them to tackle public safety issues facing our communities,” Chavez-DeRemer said. “To make Oregon safer, it’s vital to support our local police departments. Commonsense, bipartisan proposals like the Recruit and Retain Act will ensure they have the resources needed to staff up and protect Oregon families while keeping themselves safe. This National Police Week, I want to extend a sincere thank you to all law enforcement for their courageous service and dedication.”

Recruit and Retain Act (S.546): This bipartisan bill expands the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant program to support recruitment efforts by law enforcement agencies.

H.Con.Res.106: This bipartisan resolution expresses support for local law enforcement officers and condemns efforts to defund local law enforcement agencies.

Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act (H.R.7581): This bipartisan legislation enhances the safety of police officers by requiring the Attorney General to develop a series of reports related to violent attacks on law enforcement officers and the efficacy of programs intended to provide protective equipment and wellness resources to law enforcement officers.

Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act (H.R.7343): This bill requires U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to prioritize the deportation of illegal immigrants who assault law enforcement officers. Chavez-DeRemer led an amendment to ensure this would also include officers on college campuses.

Police Our Border Act (H.R. 8146): This bill would require the Attorney General to analyze the southern border crisis and its impact on local law enforcement, including how it has contributed to drug smuggling and human trafficking activity.

H.Res.1213: This resolution condemns violence against law enforcement officers and acknowledges the need for policies supporting resources and training for local police departments.

Cosponsored H.Res.1226: This bipartisan effort memorializes the 282 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2023.

Cosponsored the bipartisan Protect and Serve Act (H.R.743): This bipartisan proposal creates a criminal penalty for assault or attempted assault of a police officer.
