Crooked River Ranch woman charged with attempted murder after shooting, standoff; man shot in head treated, released

(Update: New details from sheriff, court filing)

CROOKED RIVER RANCH, Ore. (KTVZ) – A Crooked River Ranch woman was arraigned Monday on attempted murder, assault and other charges, accused of shooting a man in the head who was able to walk out of the home to law enforcement on Saturday and was treated at a hospital and released.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jason Pollock said that after Saturday’s shooting, the suspect, Karen McKay, 60, barricaded herself alone in the home with the gun, prompting a call-out of the Central Oregon Emergency Response Team, including a BearCat SWAT vehicle.

Frontier 911 dispatchers received a call shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday regarding someone shot in the head at a home on SW Ridge Place in Crooked River Ranch, Pollock said.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home about 10 minutes later, along with Oregon State Police, and the man shot in the head was able to walk out of the home toward law enforcement. Crooked River Ranch Fire & Rescue ambulance took the victim, victim, identified in court documents as Clint Matylinski, to St. Charles Bend, where a hospital spokeswoman said he was treated and released.

When the CERT team arrived, Pollock said information was obtained that indicated the woman was barricaded in the house alone, with a firearm. When CERT members arrived with a BearCat SWAT vehicle, McKay came out of the house and surrendered without further incident, the sheriff said.

McKay was arraigned Monday afternoon on five felony charges: second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. The DA’s information indicated a handgun was used in the crime.

Crook County Circuit Judge Annette Hillman set bail at $750,000 and scheduled McKay’s arraignment by video from the jail Thursday afternoon on an expected grand jury indictment.

Pollock said the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office wanted to thank Crooked River Ranch Fire & Rescue, the Central Oregon CERT Team, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and all members of the Central Oregon Major Incident Team for their assistance.

The suspect was reported to be in custody at about 4:45 p.m., the sheriff confirmed Sunday. Residents reported seeing a up to 20 or more police vehicles and SWAT units speeding to or gathered at the scene.
