Crook County community steps up with hay donations for horse seized by sheriff’s deputies

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) – The Crook County Sheriff’s Office asked for hay donations Thursday after it took possession of a horse during an investigation of reported lack of care for the animal. Hours later, it ran out of room to store any more hay and offered thanks for the community's support.
The sheriff’s office received a report of concern last Friday regarding a horse and the lack of care it was receiving, in the area of NW Lamonta Road and Rye Lane, Sergeant Javier Sanchez said.
The investigation led the agency to take possession of the horse on Wednesday, he said, declining to divulge further information amid an ongoing investigation.
In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office had originally asked for donations of small bales of grass hay, up to a half-tone.
Later, in an updated post, they said they had received enough donations and “don’t have room to store more! We thank the community for their generosity and will reach back out if more is needed! THANK YOU!”
“We would also like to give a big thanks to those in the community who donated hay as we continue to provide care for the horse,” the sergeant said. “We would also like to thank everyone else who offered to donate hay.”
Sanchez said the sheriff’s office also wanted to thank HomeTown Animal Hospital in Prineville for their assistance. They said the horse is under veterinary care and getting a pedicure soon.
