Sad Redmond reminder: Downtown ice rink won’t reopen this winter, but efforts continue on a replacement

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Downtown Redmond Ice Skate Rink will not open for the 2024-25 season, the city reminded Thursday. A series of costly equipment failures led to the decision to not invest more into the current rink, but there are plans afoot for a new, larger one downtown.

The temporary rink was first installed in 2010 and has exceeded its useful life by five years. "The Downtown Urban Renewal Advisory Committee (DURAC) will continue to explore replacement options and other alternatives for future seasons," the city announcement said.

“The Redmond community has frequently expressed a desire for more family-friendly activities. The Urban Renewal Plan has long allocated resources to achieve that goal,” says DURAC Chair Monica Huey. “The rink has become an annual holiday tradition, and we’d like to see that continued.”

The City of Redmond said it "would like to express its appreciation to Redmond Area Parks & Recreation for their role in managing the ice rink every winter.  Their involvement was instrumental in keeping the rink’s fees affordable for the entire community."
