Junior Forecaster: Ryland combines his math skills to thunderstorms

Ryland is in the Fourth Grade at High Lakes Elementary School and enjoys math as well as forecasting the weather. He can tell you how far away a lightning strike is just by counting the seconds from the flash to the thunder sound. Using science and math, the formula for tracking the distance from flash to boom is about 5 seconds for every mile. A great way to find out how far the lightning bolt is from you; and a good way to make sure you stay safe.

Ryland also plays baseball and his favorite position is catcher. He likes that position because he can see the whole field and enjoys giving signals to the pitchers.

Thanks for helping out with our weather forecast.
