Possible record heat today, fire weather concerns Sunday

As we move through the first weekend of summer 2024, we will be hot. Today I expect several locations to reach the low to middle 90s as the heat arrives from the southwest. The region is not expected to be too breezy, but it may see a few gusts in the 15 to 20 mph range. A few clouds are expected, but generally the region will see more sunshine than cloud cover.

Remember to stay hydrated today, take frequent breaks, wear loose fitting and lightly colored clothes. A nice wide brimmed hat will be a good idea as well.

Sunday will not be as hot, but still on the warm side. The highs will be in the low to middle 80s Sunday and sky conditions will be mostly sunny. The biggest concern for the Pacific Northwest Sunday will be the high fire danger. There will be dry fuel on the ground, dry air, some gusty winds at times and still on the hot side. The best chance for aggressive fire growth Sunday will be north of our Tri-Counties in Wasco and northern Wheeler counties and points north and east.

Although we are not officially under the microscope for fire weather concerns, we are still going to be dry, very warm, and breezy Sunday. Any fire ignition will spread quickly so be mindful of anything that may start a fire.

The first full week of summer will be warmer than normal with highs likely in the low to middle 80s. Normal highs in Central Oregon this time of year are around the middle to upper 70s.
