Persistent pattern of rain and snow through the weekend
The series of winter storms continue to push through the Pacific Northwest bringing heavy mountain snow, gusty winds, rain, and snow mix across the High Desert. This pattern is expected to continue through the weekend. If you are traveling this weekend, prepare for some inclement conditions. The passes will continue to pile up the snow causing slow going and icy/snow packed surfaces. The lower elevations will hover around the freezing mark overnight so icy roads are possible. Rain during the day and snow at night and early in the morning will define the next three days.
Rain will begin to pile up as the week moves along and there may be as much as a half inch of rain in the Bend area by tonight. Minor flooding is a concern in some of the low lying regions and folks who live near creeks or streams need to keep an eye on the rising water levels. Not saying we are in for major flooding conditions, but we need to be mindful of the water levels in the area and ponding on some roads.
The high temperatures each afternoon will be in the middle 40s along 97 and 126, allowing melting snow to wet the roads. The temperatures overnight will be near freezing, so patchy ice is a concern. The weather is varied this time of year, and this melting and re-freezing is common. Please be careful as you drive or walk this week and this weekend.
A break in the wet pattern is expected Monday as high pressure moves overhead and clears out the mess. The end of the year will be dry and cold with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s. New Year’s Eve will be cold and dry, New Year’s Day may see a stray shower pass by, but generally dry.
Please stay safe.
