A Winter Weather Advisory has been issues by the National Weather Service going into effect tonight and lasting through Friday. Several waves of snow are likely to cross Central Oregon causing travel issues throughout the area. The snow is expected to start after midnight and linger off and on for 48 hours at least.

Several locations bottomed out in the sub-zero range this morning under clear skies and light winds. The coldest spot this morning was La Pine where the mercury dropped to 15 degrees below zero.

A number of records fell this morning as you can see, here are some of the notable numbers from this morning:

La Pine      -15
Sunriver     -11
Sisters         -8
Bend            -8
Prineville      -6
Redmond     -5

There will be more cold air today as the temperatures will once again stay below freezing. Of note, the last time we were above freezing was Monday at 1:30 pm. We are not expected to get above 32° until early Friday afternoon.  Tonight will be another cold night, not as cold as this morning, but still well below the normal 24 for February 12th. Temperatures will drop below zero in some areas like Sunriver and La Pine once again while other areas get into the single digits.

The event that will change the cold pattern in place will arrive tonight after midnight.  A widespread shield of snow is likely to arrive close to the midnight hour and provide us with about 2 – 3” of snow by the morning commute Thursday.  This snow will end in the middle of the morning, then redevelop around sunset.  The snow will linger off and on into Friday with the feature responsible for the snow, an area of low pressure, will migrate east throwing back snow into the region.  The snow Friday will mainly impact the east face of the Cascades.  Great for snow riders, not so for travelers as the roads will be slick.

Saturday will be a dry and mild day with highs in the 40s. There will be a brief break in the snow shower activity as Sunday will provide some more light snow.  That pattern continues into Monday with just a few light snow showers crossing the region.

Please stay safe.

The moon will be full on this day, so if the clouds stay away for a bit, we should have a nice view of the moon early in the evening.
