March to come in like a lamb Saturday, showers possible Sunday
The record breaking warmth of Thursday and Friday had the region feeling more like late May than late February. Record highs were broken in a number of locations as high pressure continues to keep the region well above normal.
The ridge breaks down over the weekend, opening the door for slightly cooler weather on Saturday and a few showers on Sunday. The cool pattern on Saturday will also be a result an increase in cloud cover as well as the high migrating east. The rain and mountain snow Sunday will be associated with an area of low pressure that is likely to pass south and west of Central Oregon. This feature will be close enough to provide the chance for the snow and rain.
Monday we are likely to see a few lingering showers, light snow may impact your morning commute. Once the low clears the western region of the country, we should be looking at dry and near normal temperatures the rest of the week. Showers may return after mid-week, but we will fine tune the forecast when we come closer to that time frame.
The expression in the title refers to the old adage "March comes in like a Lion, and goes out like a Lamb" referring to the weather patterns. Often the transition from winter to spring is a bit volatile as air masses are clashing at this time and windy and stormy weather is not uncommon. As we move into spring, the weather, in some spots, is a bit more calm. Not very meteorologically sound, but it was what I was told as a child and it has stayed with me.
