Still mild and cloudy as March begins, rain and mountain snow possible Sunday

March is coming in like a lamb, not a lion.  That expression refers to the adage "March comes in like a Lion and goes out like a Lamb" referring to the weather patterns during the transitional month of March.  March shuts the door on winter and opens the door for spring. Often, the transition from winter to spring is a bit volatile as air masses are clashing.  We transition from cold to warm, and windy and stormy weather is not uncommon in certain parts of the country at this time of year.  Not very meteorologically sound, but does have some truth to it as well. Basically, it was what I was told as a child, and it has stayed with me.

Today it is the opposite, we are calm and mild, with late day clouds.

The ridge that has been parked over the Pacific Northwest is breaking down today, opening the door for slightly cooler weather.  The cooler pattern today is still about 15 degrees above our normal 49 degrees.  As the day moves along the clouds will thicken as we get ready for some rain before the sun comes up on Sunday.

The rain and mountain snow Sunday will be associated with an area of low pressure that is likely to pass south and west of Central Oregon. This feature will be close enough to provide the chance for snow and rain, so the mountains will add some fresh powder, and the high desert gets a light watering.

Monday we are likely to see a few lingering showers, light snow may impact your morning commute. Once the morning mix ends, we should be looking at dry afternoon.  Tuesday and near normal temperatures with a few stray showers possible.
