LOCAL WEATHER ALERT DAY: Cram Fire continues to grow as smoky pattern remains as the region heats up heading into the weekend

Bend, OR (KTVZ).  The Cram Fire continues to generate significant smoke to the region as the footprint grows.  This fire is now the largest in the country at over 60k acres. There is a lot of fuel to consume in the region and with daily wind shifts, the expansion of the perimeter continues to spread in different directions. Today, there will be a shift from the northeast winds to a more northerly wind, pushing smoke toward Crook County late in the day.

The weather pattern remains dry and hot. We did have a brief break from the 90-degree days Tuesday, but that number returns today.  Highs on Thursday and Friday will be in the middle 90s before dropping back to the 80s Saturday and Sunday.

The fire danger is still a high priority in the region.  Make sure to be aware that any spark may lead to another wildfire. We have had to deal with two large fires this week, the Highland and Cram Fires, and the resources are being stretched thin.

Winds pick up Thursday and the temperatures hit the 90s, therefore the National Weather Service has placed the western portion of Jefferson County under a Fire Weather Watch for the afternoon and evening hours.  Most likely this will be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning later today.

Friday, we remain hot and dry with little relief in sight from the dry pattern. Over the weekend the mercury in the thermometer will only top out in the middle to upper 80s, just about normal for mid-July.

I expect there to be lingering smoke and poor air quality for a while, so try and limit any outdoor activity.

Stay inside if you can in this unhealthy air pattern. If you do go outside, it may be a good idea to wear a mask to keep the particulate matter out of your lungs.
