Local Alert Day: Today and Friday as rain and snow mix to cause travel issues

KTVZ

Bend, Ore (KTVZ)-- The Local Alert Weather Team has issued a Local Alert Day for today (Thursday) and again for Friday.

There is likely to be steady rain across the mountains as a warm air mass and an atmospheric river will work in concert. There is a chance for over an inch of rain to fall in western Deschutes and Jefferson Counties by the end of the event Friday. Minor flooding is possible, while landslides and mudslides are possible in some mountain locations west of the Tri-Counties.

The rain showers today in the region are going to be steady and there may be a period of moderate rainfall at times. The bulk of the rain will be squeezed out by the coastal range and the Cascades but we are still in line for about an inch of rain by noon Friday.

A cold front will cross the region before sunrise Friday and our milder pattern will shift to a much cooler one. Rain will change to snow. Mountain locations may see up to 3 or more inches.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place along with a Wind Advisory as well as a Flood Watch.

Rainfall amounts are for the entire time of the event. Mountain locations will see more robust rainfall amounts. Creeks and streams are expected to run fast and full and mountain roads are vulnerable to mudslides and landslides.

The Friday morning commute will be impacted by a wintry mix of rain and snow with snow being more dominant than the rain. For this reason we have issued another Local Alert Day for Friday as well as today.  This alert day is only for the morning as the skies will clear by the early afternoon.

Saturday will be dry and chilly with highs in the low 40s. Breezy conditions are also expected, so keep the inflatables deflated.

Sunday will see periods of snow with some rain mixed in as well. The flow of the Atmospheric River will shift to the south this weekend, so the rain and snow will not be as persistent, but still present.

Monday will be dry and chilly with highs in the middle 40s and breezy at times. More rain and snow are slated for Tuesday, but generally only a few passing showers of rain mixed with snow.

Please, Stay safe.
