An 18-year-old Warm Springs resident died Monday at St. Charles Madras after an early-morning shooting outside his home on the reservation, the FBI said Tuesday night.

Oregon FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele said the FBI and the Warm Springs Police Department are investigating the shooting death of Raymond Sam-Smith, a member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

Steele said authorities detained, then released a person of interest, pending further investigation.

“There is no known threat to the public,” Steele said. She added that no more information can be released at this time, due to the ongoing investigation. A call to the Warm Springs police chief was not returned.

A friend told NewsChannel 21 on Wednesday that Sam-Smith was a tribal dancer who competed at powwows across the state.

“He was a sweet spirit with big smiles for all,” she said. “He will be sorely missed.”
