Feds: $7 million to Oregon community health centers

KTVZ

Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., announced Wednesday that 25 community health centers throughout Oregon, including Mosaic Medical in Prineville, will get more than $7 million in federal resources to expand access to treatment for substance use and mental health treatment.

“Oregonians battling substance use and mental health challenges need access to quality care throughout our state,” Wyden said. “This federal support provides essential help for Oregon clinics to bolster that care for patients and provide their loved ones the peace of mind that good treatment is available within their communities.”

“Every American deserves comprehensive health care, and that includes substance use and mental health treatment,” Merkley said. “I’ve heard from health care leaders across the state about the integral role community health centers play in Oregonians’ lives, and these grants will support these critical community providers.”

“Through our hub and spoke model, patients at our Lane County Medication Assisted Treatment Program being treated for opiate use disorder are seamlessly tied to auxiliary substance abuse treatment as well as primary care services through our Community Health Centers of Lane County,” said Karen Gaffney, Director of Lane County Health & Human Services.

“These resources allow for a critical expansion to that model and an important step towards fighting opiate addiction and dependency in Lane County. Thanks to this help from our federal partners, Lane County Medication Assisted Treatment Program and the Community Health Centers of Lane County will be able to expand access and further engage our patients, and in doing so help improve the health of some of our most vulnerable community members.”

“This award will dramatically strengthen our team’s ability to combat the opioid epidemic, bringing additional evidence-based treatment options to our patients and their families here in Wallowa County,” said Dr. Elizabeth Powers, Innovations Director of the Winding Waters clinic in Enterprise.

“We are so grateful for this critical support for our services,” said Kim Oveson, La Clinica’s behavioral health director. “For people with substance use and mental health challenges, sometimes a standard medical visit isn’t enough to address concerns. They need more services, and this will help us help this population address overall health goals.”
