DCSO still searching for sex offender on the run
(Update: DCSO says no area alert because he left area in vehicle, apparently headed north)
Deschutes County sheriff’s detectives spent Friday looking for a man who served 16 years in prison for raping two Bend teen girls and who cut off his GPS ankle tracking bracelet Thursday night in Deschutes River Woods and fled the area, apparently in a vehicle.
David Dale Cook, 37, removed the GPS unit around 8 p.m. Thursday near the Riverwoods Country Store, having been released from the Deschutes County Jail earlier in the day after serving a 42-day sanction for violating terms of his parole, county Community Justice Deputy Director Tanner Wark said.
Several sheriff’s deputies assisted the Parole and Probation Department in searching for Cook, but he was not found. Wark asked anyone who sees Cook to contact the Parole and Probation office at 541-385-3245 or any local law enforcement agency.
Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Eggert explained that a phone alert to area residents was not done becuase officials determined shortly after they arrived that Cook had left the area in a vehicle. He added that they have no vehicle information at this time. The sheriff’s office said it believes he was heading north, though the destination is unknown.
“Deputies spent the overnight hours following up on information and actively attempting to locate him,” a county spokeswoman said. Sgt. William Bailey said that effort continued throughout the day Friday.

In 2001, Cook, a 19-year-old Crooked River Ranch resident at the time, was sentenced to 200 months in prison for two convictions of first-degree rape and one of first-degree sodomy.
Cook had admitted to police to breaking into a southwest Bend home in December of 2000 and raping a 15-year-old girl. He later admitted entering a northeast Bend home seven months earlier and raping a 17-year-old girl.
Cook was released from prison in August 2017 and faced more than 11 years of post-prison supervision, concluding in 2029, Wark said. A sex offender notification sheet dated Thursday lists Cook as homeless and having no job or vehicle.
His post-prison conditions included sex offender treatment, no contact with minors without prior permission, not being in any place where minors congregate or on any adjacent property to a school, child care center, playground or other place used primarily by minors.
