Teen dies after Black Butte Ranch water rescue

An 18-year-old from India who was working at Black Butte Ranch and fell off a pedal board at the resort’s lake earlier this month died two days later at St. Charles Bend, police confirmed Wednesday.

Police Sgt. Steve Vuylsteke identified the Phalarope Lake drowning victim as Tarun Verma of India, who was pulled from the water and brought to shore by three witnesses on the afternoon of Sunday, June 2.

Verma was revived, given CPR by medics and flown by air ambulance to the Bend hospital, where he died on June 4, the sergeant said.

The teen was using a 10 1/2-foot pedal board, a paddleboard equipped with handlebars, pedals and a rudder, police said at the time.

The public portions of Verma’s Facebook page indicated he had moved to Sisters in early May and began work as a kitchen trainee at Black Butte Ranch.
