Bend Fire & Rescue says during winter weather, calls increase reporting slips, falls and car accidents

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – The rain, snow and heavy winds hit all at once, leaving spots like Mt. Bachelor dealing with 100 mph winds.

Bend Fire & Rescue says they stay ready and prepared.

That preparedness means vehicles are equipped with chains to serve areas that get higher snow levels, like Aubrey Butte and Deschutes River Woods.

During this time of year, the fire department has a higher call volume, dealing with a number of issues. Two, in particular, Deputy Fire Marshal, Dan Derlacki says, can be avoided.

“This time of year, we get the snow and the ice on the ground. Our typical call volume jumps up a little bit for motor vehicle accidents and the slips and falls. just the potential that it's out there, that's normal. those are the types of things we get more of,” said Derlacki.

One of the biggest issues Bend Fire & Rescue faces is residents parking in front of, or blocking access to the fire hydrant, and piling snow on top of it.

Make sure your heating devices are used as designed, and provide at least 3 feet of space around them.

Some additional tips from the deputy fire marshal:

• Even if you think you’re an expert in driving in snow, the key to the game is ‘slow and consistent.’

•  Try not to stop hard, try not to accelerate quickly, and don’t turn sharply.
