Snow possible with cold temperatures this afternoon and overnight

Happy Friday Central Oregon!  This morning again brings concern for slick roads due to snowpack melting and then refreezing with temperatures well below 32 degrees early.

Additionally, snow is likely throughout today as we expect significant snow in the mountains (possibly 1 – 2 feet) by Friday night. Several inches are possible in the lower elevations and as a result there will likely be visibility issues on your morning and possibly evening commutes especially in the mountains where winds are quite active.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect in Central Oregon until 4am Sunday due to expected heavy snow which could total 10-16 inches and winds gusting as high as 35mph creating hazardous travel conditions.  The warning is also in place along the east slopes of the cascades including La Pine And Sunriver for possible snow accumulations of 16-40inches and winds as high as 60mph with hazardous wind chills as low as 25 below zero.

An Arctic cold front is moving into the region and dropping temperatures into the teens and single digits in Central Oregon by late this afternoon and overnight with more single digit lows coming this weekend. Combined with north winds of around 5 to 15 mph, wind chill will become a hazard. A Wind Chill Watch is in place from tonight until Sunday at 4am due to possibility of dangerously cold wind chills as low as 15 degrees below zero.

Locally sustained winds will be out of the Northwest today in the 10-25mph range with gusts closer to 30 mph possible in lower elevations and gusts up to 70mph in the Cascades.  Winds will relax a bit by midday through the afternoon.

Highs will be chilly today in the 20s and 30s and overnight lows will be extremely cold in the teens and single digits. Stay safe and warm.
