Iconic multi-stage race still in need of volunteers

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The SELCO Pole Pedal Paddle, Central Oregon's premier multi-sport event, is excited to announce an exhilarating addition to its renowned course lineup. For the upcoming Saturday, May 18 event, participants will embark on a new run course, featuring a picturesque route passing through one of its Contributing Sponsors, Touchmark at Mount Bachelor Village, adding scenic beauty and furthering community connection to the race.

As one of the highlights of the PPP experience, the run segment has been reimagined to showcase the natural splendor and vibrant community spirit of Bend. Runners will have the opportunity to traverse through scenic trails, charming neighborhoods, and iconic landmarks, including a stretch through the stunning grounds of Touchmark at Mount Bachelor Village.

"We're thrilled to unveil our new run course, which not only promises a thrilling athletic challenge but could be the best run course in the history of the PPP," said Marieka Greene, Events Director at Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation and Race Director of the SELCO Pole Pedal Paddle. "Passing through Touchmark at Mount Bachelor Village adds a special touch to the course, highlighting the synergy between outdoor recreation and community engagement that defines Pole Pedal Paddle."

Touchmark at Mount Bachelor Village, known for its commitment to active living and exceptional senior living experiences, is delighted to be part of the SELCO Pole Pedal Paddle journey. Not only will the new route through Touchmark showcase the community's stunning surroundings, it will also provide an opportunity for residents to remain close to home while participating themselves, cheering on athletes, and supporting as volunteers in the Touchmark hydration station. Touchmark has two teams participating in this year’s event; one comprised of staff and another with a mix of residents and staff.

"We're honored to be included in the Pole Pedal Paddle run course," said Touchmark Director of Health & Fitness Liz Rupar. "This event embodies the spirit of active living and community connection that we champion at Touchmark, and we're excited for residents to participate in the race as well as welcome participants as they pass through our community.”

A Call for Volunteers

Volunteers play an indispensable role in ensuring the event's smooth operation, from registration and packet pickup to course marshaling and event logistics. Whether you're a seasoned local or a visitor eager to experience the vibrant energy of PPP, there are various volunteer opportunities available to suit your interests and schedule.

"We couldn't host this incredible event without the dedication and support of our volunteers," said Greene. "Volunteering for PPP is not only a fantastic way to give back to the community but also an opportunity to be part of an event that celebrates the outdoor lifestyle Central Oregon offers.”

All volunteers receive a commemorative 2024 PPP T-shirt. Race-day volunteers who work for three or more hours will also receive lunch. Volunteers within the MBSEF community also have unique access to other events and related perks. Additionally, volunteering for PPP offers a chance to connect with fellow community members, gain valuable event management experience, and contribute to the success of one of Central Oregon's most beloved traditions.
