Texas man who claimed intellectual disability is executed for 1997 killing of female jogger

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Texas has executed a man for the killing of a woman out jogging near her Houston home more than 27 years ago. Fifty-four-year-old Arthur Lee Burton received a lethal injection Wednesday evening at the state penitentiary in Huntsville. He was convicted of the July 1997 murder of 48-year-old mother of three Nancy Adleman. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected Burton’s late request for a stay of execution over arguments he was intellectually disabled. His lawyers cited a 2002 Supreme Court ruling prohibiting the execution of intellectually disabled people. But prosecutors said Burton’s intelligence was above average and he waited just days before his scheduled execution to raise that claim.
