KTVZ-TV

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — This November, KTVZ News is unveiling Seismic Shift, a special four-part series that dives deep into how Central Oregon is connected to — and preparing for — the next major tsunami event along the Oregon Coast.

Beginning Nov. 6, the series will explore the science, impact, and preparedness efforts surrounding a potential Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and tsunami — an event experts say is not a question of if, but when.

Nov. 6: Understanding the Threat
Anchor Lee Anderson opens the series by explaining the science behind tsunamis and the seismic forces that could trigger a catastrophic wave along the Oregon Coast. Anderson’s report sets the foundation for why scientists believe the region must stay vigilant.

Nov. 13: Preparing on the Coast
Reporter Claire Elmer heads to the coast to showcase how coastal communities, researchers, and emergency managers are working to prepare for the inevitable. From evacuation routes to education campaigns, Elmer highlights the coastal readiness efforts already underway.

Nov. 20: The Inland Impact
Spencer Sacks examines how a major tsunami would ripple far beyond the coast, affecting Central Oregon through mass evacuations, transportation challenges, and strain on infrastructure. His report explores the logistics of sheltering thousands of displaced residents and visitors.

Nov. 25: Central Oregon as a Safe Haven
Rounding out the series, Jillian Fortner focuses on Deschutes County’s evolving role as a regional safe haven. Her story highlights local emergency operations, coordination efforts, and the planning that could make Central Oregon a lifeline in the aftermath of a coastal disaster.

Throughout November, viewers can follow Seismic Shift on all KTVZ News, including KTVZ+, as the team uncovers how Central Oregon is preparing to play a critical role in tsunami survival — both for itself and for the state.
