Oregon DOC reviews sentences under new court guidance

SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) - The Oregon Department of Corrections is reviewing prison sentences again, following new guidance from the state Supreme Court on how time served is calculated.

DOC Director Michael Reese says the agency remains committed to public safety and transparency throughout the process.

The changes come after the Torres-Lopez v. Fahrion ruling, which could impact release dates for some adults in custody. Officials say it’s not yet clear how many cases will be affected.

Victims who want updates can sign up for Oregon’s VISOR system at visor.oregon.gov.

The system alerts victims to any changes and works with courts and attorneys as the reviews continue.

The Torres-Lopez v. Fahrion case centers on time served in jail before sentencing. It clarifies that, if a judge allows it, that time can count toward a person’s prison sentence, no matter the reason they were in jail.

The goal is to ensure no one serves extra, uncredited time, so every day spent behind bars counts toward completing their sentence.
