SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Condolences are being shared across Oregon’s political community following the death of former Oregon Senate President Gene Derfler at the age of 101.

Derfler’s career spanned decades of public service and private accomplishment. A World War II Naval aviator, Derfler later became a successful Salem business owner before entering state politics. As a Republican lawmaker, he played a key role in overhauling Oregon’s workers’ compensation system, a reform still recognized as a major chapter in the state’s legislative history.

After retiring from public life, Derfler devoted his time to woodworking, a passion that connected him to his community in a different way. He handcrafted toy trucks for local children and created detailed carvings of Oregon fish, several of which still adorn the State Capitol as a lasting tribute to his craftsmanship and service.

Messages from fellow lawmakers, staff, and Oregonians remembering Derfler’s contributions continue to arrive at the Capitol, honoring a man who left his mark both in policy and in wood.
