New automated traffic enforcement program starts in Bend on May 30

MGN Online

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The City of Bend and the Bend Police Department will begin issuing citations for speeding and red-light violations through the Automated Traffic Enforcement program on Saturday, May 30. This initiative aims to reduce motor vehicle crashes and enhance traffic safety at three specific intersections across the city.

The start of citations follows a 45-day warning period, during which 1,164 warnings were issued to drivers between April 23 and May 18. This warning phase served as the initial step in implementing the program, which is designed to improve safety for all road users in the community.

Cameras at the three designated intersections went live on April 15. These locations were selected due to a high number of crashes and community complaints. The intersections are SE Reed Market Road and Third Street (westbound), NE Neff Road and 27th Street (southbound and westbound), and U.S. Business 97 and Powers Road (northbound).

Signs alerting drivers to the automated traffic enforcement cameras are installed near each intersection and on major routes as drivers enter City of Bend limits.

When cameras detect a vehicle speeding or running a red light, including failing to make a complete stop before a right turn, images and video are captured. This evidence is then sent to a Bend Police Department Traffic Enforcement Agent, who reviews the incident to determine if a citation should be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Citations issued through the Automated Traffic Enforcement program are handled by the Bend Municipal Court.

Citations for speeding and red-light violations will commence on Saturday, May 30.
