Three dead and seven injured in Twin Falls restaurant shooting

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) -- Three people are dead and seven others were injured following a shooting at a Twin Falls restaurant this past Saturday. Police identified the gunman as 24-year-old Chad Williams, who died by suicide after opening fire on patrons with a rifle.

The shooting occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. at an In-N-Out Burger, just one week after the location celebrated its grand opening. Investigators from several law enforcement agencies and the FBI have secured the scene to determine the motive behind the attack.

An off-duty Idaho State Police trooper and a local resident returned fire at the shooter during the incident. Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said their quick actions forced Williams away from the crowded restaurant area, likely preventing further casualties. Hicks described the scene as one of the most chaotic instances a law enforcement officer can face. “We want to take a moment and commend the actions of the off duty officer in this citizen and their heroic action to stop this incident,” Hicks said. “We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties.”

Twin Falls County Sheriff Jack Johnson also praised the intervention of the two individuals. “These people are true heroes in our community and their actions diverted the shooter and no doubt saved many lives. Thank you very much,” Johnson said. The restaurant remained closed through Sunday as the parking lot and surrounding areas were roped off with police tape.

Among the three people killed was a female employee of the restaurant. Her death was confirmed in a statement released by In-N-Out Burger leadership. Seven other victims suffered injuries during the shooting.

The FBI is assisting local authorities in the investigation. Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls emphasized the agency's commitment to finding answers for the families involved. “This is an incredibly painful time for the city of Twin Falls and for our entire community,” Bohls said. “We remain committed to our partners, the victims, their families and we will work to get the answers that they deserve.”

Investigators are currently reviewing videos recorded by witnesses and searching social media posts for information related to the shooting. Police said the family of Williams is heartbroken and is cooperating with the investigation. Officials are working to piece together the events that led to the shooting.

Police said it will take a significant amount of time to process the evidence at the scene and analyze digital recordings. Law enforcement will continue to review social media posts and witness videos as they search for a motive.
